RIVALITÄT & AUSEINANDERSETZUNGEN 

die Rivalität zwischen beiden Mannschaften flammt wieder auf = rivalry between the two teams has been reignited/rekindled; rivalry is brewing/increases another notch/peg; when these two teams face off there’s usually plenty of taunts and trash talk/sledge (AUS) 

die Anhänger des Gegners sind mit ihren Provokationen zu weit gegangen = the rivaling fans went overboard/over-the-top with their taunts

beide Klubs mögen sich nicht = this bitter rivalry is punctuated by mutual disdain; the two franchises have a deep dislike for each other; there is no love lost between these two teams; two teams with a history of bad blood/ill feelings between them show no signs of letting up/relenting; things usually get testy between these two teams

es ging hart zu  = it was a testy/chippy/scrappy/choppy game; players got chippy/testy in first season meeting; we won ugly; it was a game of inches, pinches and niggles; there was too much rough stuff/roughing up going on; players got into it; things got physical between both teams; there were lots of elbow swipe/forearm contact; it was a knock-down, drag-out game; a few plays went overboard; things got a little rowdy down the road

ab und zu ist wird ein Spiel ruppig  = there is plenty of rough playing around, such as hard hits, rough-and-tumble/rowdy play, rough-house tactics, chippy/scrappy playing, out-of-the-ordinary elbows, bruising/blue collar style, etc

Gegner setzt auf rustikale Spielweise = opponent plays a more physical game as its lineup has a few sturdy and stocky players; opponent puts the boot in  

wir haben einige Kämpfer in unserer Mannschaft = we have a few scrappers/battlers on our team, players are out there hustling

Spieler verschafft sich Vorteile mit schmutzigen Tricks = that was a dirty shot/dirty stuff by player; he is known for getting/playing dirty; player does the dirty to other player

Spieler, die eine unfair, gefährliche Spielweise an den Tag legen, werden von der Liga gebrieft = league puts players on notice when it comes to dirty/dangerous play     

Spieler ist unterlaufen worden = player was undercut/low bridged by defender; player runs beneath opponent

Verteidiger wird umgerannt = the big fellow flattened/barreled into/knocked over the defender

er legt sich mit einem Gegner an = player messes/tangles with other player; player gets into it again/takes on opponent; he’s asking for/ courting trouble; player gets in opponent’s face; player picks a fight with an opponent; the same two players are at it/are butting heads again; there is a shoving match between two players

immer sind die gleichen Spieler die Bösen = the same players are always painted to be the bad guys

die Gemüter erhitzen sich/sind auf dem Siedepunkt  = tempers flared/frayed/boiled over again; the two players got into a heated exchange; an already testy game reached a boiling point midway through the fourth quarter/toward the end of the game  

jede Mannschaft hat einen „bösen Buben“  = every team has an „enforcer“/a „bruiser“

Spieler begeht ein böses Foul = player takes/throws out a cheapshot against opponent; this foul felt cheap, foul was graded as rough conduct by refs  

es wurde noch nachgetreten (physisch) =  fouled player gets another kick from perpetrator for good measure/to boot

nach rüdem Foul tritt Spieler nach/geht die Post ab = player takes a swing at his defender; player retaliated in kind; player returned the favor; fists/sparks began to fly; emotions started to run high/wild; tempers flared/bubbled over; blows were traded; a fisticuff broke out;  players started to throw punches; soon it came to blows; players brawled with each other   

einige Bezeichnungen für Schlägerei/Handgemenge/Prügelei = dust-up//blow-up/bust-up/brawl/donnybrook/fisticuffs

manchmal geht es zu weit mit dem Nachtreten  = defender takes a cheap shot at the striker; players frighten/stare down the opponent; they like mean-mugging other teams; angry player shoots a menacing stare at opponent; player makes a nasty statement against opponent to show who’s in command; never/you shouldn’t kick someone when he’s down; kicking somebody in the nuts is a cheap shot (vulgar)

die Drohgebärde geht daneben = player gave another player a mean/long/dirty mug (i.e.look), then got tossed for taunting/razzing by referee

Sieg wird durch Ohrfeige geschmälert = off-ball punch mars team win over opponent

es wird hart zugelangt = players trade blows/insults over a rough elbow swing; player takes a dig at his scrappy defender

durch Provokationen vom Gegner wird Superstar zum Hirsch = opponent wakes up the beast in superstar

auf dem Parkett/Spielfeld zeigt er die dunkle Seite seines Charakters = by tapping into his inner villain player displays a mean attitude on court/on the pitch

Mitspieler sind schockiert über seine Kommentare im Internet = team is gobsmacked by the player’s postings in the Internet

ganz klar, das ging unter die Gürtellinie = straight up, it was a punk move

bald/es fliegen die Fetzen  = players face off/square up; player is ready to fight/rumble but is restrained by his teammates/sidekicks; there was a heated push-and-shove between the two players; the two exchanged a couple words, a couple pushes; the two threw punches at each other after they got tangled up; this is turning/descending into a wild grudge match/demolition derby; teams tussled in the closing moments and players were held back from each other after they tangled 

Mannschaftskameraden greifen sofort ein, um Spieler voneinander zu trennen = the pair was quickly pulled apart/separated/had to be held back by teammates; players and officials got between them before the scuffle could escalate further

aufgeheiztes Wortgefecht zwischen beiden Streithähnen = players were barking at each other/cussing each other out; player takes exception to something opposing player said; things got heated between them (name players)

Spieler beschimpfen sich gegenseitig = war of words erupts/escalate between the two players; player gets mixed up with another player; player gets tangled up in a verbal back-and-forth with opponent; player starts to jaw with opponent/at each other; player was jawing/ mouthing with everyone; players got into it verbally/had a run-in; the players traded/exchanged verbal blows

während des Spiels wird manchmal heftig nachgetreten (verbal)  = there is a lot of trash talk/verbal jabs/verbal sparring/slanging match/sledging (AUS) between players; players fire a salvo at each other; some players get too chatty with the opponents/referees;        ·      Spieler redet Blödsinn, um den Gegner zu verunsichern = player talks trash to psyche out the opponent; player is not too soft, shakes off trash talk/sledge from opponent

neulich wurde viel nachgetreten zwischen Superstar und Management  = lately there has been a lot of trash talk between the team’s superstar and management 

zu weit/unter die Gürtellinie mit seiner Kritik gegangen = player crossed the line/jumped the shark with his trash talk/sledging (AUS)/ racist comments

einige Spieler haben eine Masche  =  player seems to enjoy acting notoriously grumpy and pretending to be angry/cranky

zwei Superstars, die sich nicht grün sind = there is a lot of bad blood brewing between these two superstars; these two superstars are always exchanging unpleasantries

die lange schwelende Rivalität zwischen beiden Superstars innerhalb des Teams tritt an die Öffentlichkeit =  the long simmering rivalry between the two superstars within the team spilled into public view/burst into the open 

pöbelnder Spieler will Gegner dazu verleiten, dass er ihm ins Gesicht schlägt = niggling player seeks to provoke opponent to throw a punch; player baited the superstar into a yellow card/technical foul; defensive player coaxes opponent into commiting an offensive foul

Sieger mokieren sich über Verlierer  = some players of winning team ridiculed/showed up/embarassed the opponent

Gewinner verhöhnt Verlierer  = from winner to loser: “cop/get that, we’re dancing on your grave”

Fangruppen skandieren ordinäre Sprüche; Spieler geht (nicht) auf Provokationen ein = taunting by fans gets out of hand; the insulting turns ugly; fans break into a vulgar chant against player; over-the-top remarks abound; player talks back to fans (i.e. reacts) after being taunted; player refuses to take the bait/avoids being lured into emotional warfare   

Sprüche des Gegners animieren Spieler zur guten Leistung = player gets fueled by opponent’s trash-talk/sledging;  player finds motivation from/”appreciates” opponents’ negative comments

Auseinandersetzung artet in eine Prügelei aus  = the jousting/scuffle turned physical

Spieler meinte es nicht ernst, es war nur Spaß = “it wasn’t any teasing or taunting, just good-nature ribbing”, player said; "be a good sport, he didn’t mean it", somebody said 

manche Spieler lassen sich nicht aus der Ruhe bringen = nothing can faze player/him; some players usually stay cool/calm/keep a calm poise/demeanor/composure; player keeps a business-like mindset; player wouldn’t let the oponent’s loud supporters throw him off

Spieler versöhnen/einigen sich nachdem Fetzen geflogen sind = players patch it up and exchange a handshake and a hug after altercation/ misunderstanding; player said “that no disrespect was meant"; they just buried the hatchet/sorted out the differences
