SCHLECHTE LAUNE & DEPRESSION


er/sie ist nicht gut drauf = she is not in a good mood; I feel down/rotten/beat up/banged up /downbeat/lousy/miserable/crummy/wretched /downcast/crook (AUS) today; she is in a grumpy/bad/foul/deflated mood today; this morning he felt out of sorts/under the weather; I was kind of/ kinda off my game yesterday; she is in low spirits today; don’t know why, but I’ve got the blues; I don’t feel up to par/ scratch today; hey, don’t get down on yourself; he isn’t feeling up to snuff this morning; yesterday he came unstuck; he/she is a little cranky this morning because she’s got a headache; he/she looks a bit dejected/deflated  

ich bin durch den Wind = I am/feel down and out/in dire straits/under a cloud

er/sie musste einen Rückschlag hinnehmen = he’s used to taking hard knocks; this setback/knockback was a shattering experience for her; he has been through the mill since he lost his job; young executives inevitably have to take their lumps to boost their careers; the seasoned minister has been through the good, the bad and the ugly of politics; he was left flailing in defeat

das war ein Schlag ins Kontor = tourism in the country is bound to take a serious hit in the wake of the latest bomb attack; by removing its privileged tax-exempt status the government dealt a heavy blow to the charity organization; that was a gut-wrenching setback for the mining giant when the government forced it to close down its most profitable mine due to environmental concerns; this time around he/she copped (AUS) it straight on the chin

das hat unseren Plan das Genick gebrochen/ausgehebelt = that was the final nail in the coffin of/for our project/plan; this left-field bombshell move derailed our plans/project

er fühlt sich (sehr) deprimiert/einsam = I’m absolutely devastated/shattered/gutted; this setback has darkened my mood; I’m close to plumbing the murky depths of despair; the whole family is mired in depression after the father passed away; it’s not the right time to hang heads; the separation from my wife weighs me down/drags me down; depression is weighing on/eating at/affecting his mood heavily; he/she has gone through dark times that left him/her reclusive and depressed 

mein Freund ist heute schlecht gelaunt = my boyfriend today is sporting a frown/has got the blues

die Sorgen loswerden = get rid of/wipe away your worries; don’t keep your feelings bottled up

man soll den Kummer nicht im Alkohol ertränken = don’t drown your sorrows in/numb/alleviate your problems/distress with alcohol/ wine/beer

er sieht aus, wie der Tod auf Latschen = he looks like a walking dead

Was ist los mit ihm? = What’s the matter/wrong with him?

der Tod des Onkels hat ihn schwer getroffen = the passing of his uncle affected him deeply/really hit home for (name of person)

heute geht's mir beschissen = today I feel down/(a bit) under the weather

er war fassungslos/sehr bedrückt als er hörte, dass seine Frau die Scheidung eingereicht hat = he felt devastated/(deeply) shocked/ shattered/gutted when he heard his wife was filing for divorce

in unserer Abteilung herrscht Katerstimmung = the mood in our department is very downbeat; presently there is a bad vibe/poor atmosphere in our department 

ich bin mental ausgebrannt = I feel mentally drained

seit geraumer Zeit geht er auf dem Zahnfleisch= lately he’s been running on empty

seine Müdigkeit war ihm anzusehen = the lack of sleep was telling on him

man sieht es ihm an, dass er kaputt ist = he's tired and it shows 

man muss ab und zu seinen Frust loswerden = every now and then one has to let off steam/vent one’s frustration

im Büro/Zuhause wird's langsam frustrierend = frustration at work/home is beginning to bubble over

man soll nicht zu viel grübeln = you mull too much over your wasted life; you spend too much time grappling with uncertainty

nicht nur dir geht es so mies/beschissen =  you’re not be the only one to have it bad; you’ll probably feel better if you spare a thought for all those poor souls who barely have a bite to eat

ich fühle mich im Tal der Tränen = Valley of Despair is a good description for my mood right now

deine Frau sollte nicht in Selbstmitleid versinken = your wife should quit indulging/engaging in self-pity

er/sie ist sauer auf mich/irgendjemanden/-was = he was upset/angry with me; she got mad/sore at him; I got ticked off/teed off/miffed by his callous/nasty/despicable comments; she gets/grows cranky/enraged every time she gets mistreated/wronged by her boss; don’t get worked up/fired up about what politicians stay; I am steamed/fazed over my kids’ unruly manners/behavior; my wife is crook on/at me (AUS); he was looking daggers at her; she scowled at her daughter for coming home late at night; she was up in arms/on the warpath against her neighbor

ich bin total sauer = I’m mad as hell

sie hat sich fürchterlich aufgeregt = she threw a tantrum

die schlechte Behandlung hat ihn/sie auf die Palme gebracht = he raised the roof because he/she was poorly treated   

sie sind total sauer = they are so (stress) pissed (slightly vulgar) 

er war total sauer auf seinen Chef = he got really pissed off (slightly vulgar) with his boss

nee, ich bin nicht sauer auf dich = no sour grapes; I’m not mad at you; no, your rude words didn't set me off  off 

sie ist angefressen = she's a bit on the sulky side today; she is browned off/cheesed off/pissed (slightly vulgar) at her boyfriend (AUS/UK)

er konnte es sich nicht mehr mit ansehen = he just hunched over and clasped his hands

sie ist nur noch ein Schatten ihrer selbst = she is just a shadow/shell of her former self 

Trost finden und spenden = she takes/finds consolation/solace in poetry/painting/classic music; the lone bright spot in old men lives are their grandchildren; this wine is balsam to his feelings; she needs somebody/a shoulder to lean on

sie hat ihn getröstet = she gave him some comfort

obwohl er sehr ehrgeizig war, musste er mit einem bescheidenen Job vorliebnehmen bzw. sich damit abfinden = although he was very ambitious he had to make do with a meaningless office job/resign himself to working as a bank employee   

man kann nicht immer wählerisch sein = sometimes you've gotta take the rough with the smooth 

Schadenfreude/Häme kommt auf; es wird nachgetreten = schadenfreude is that wicked pleasure of revelling in another person’s failure/ discomfiture; I hate grave-dancers who always seem to delight in/rejoice in/gloat about/over someone else’s misfortunes;  the fans crowed/ jeered at the other team’s downfall; it’s kind of improper to find joy in the misery of others; he is sporting an ear-to-ear grin; a sly/satisfied smile plastered across one’s face can be a sign/an indicator of schadenfreude; he flashed/ cracked her a “told-you-so” smirk/ smile; they are all Cheshire Cat (i.e. wearing a broad smile, from a fable); you shouldn’t sit back and rub your hands in glee; editorial writers have been swimming in schadenfreude after the country’s constitutional court ruled that a law granting immunity from corruption charges to the prime minister was invalid; after defeat player’s cheeky act rubs salt into team‘s wound

sie hat Einfühlungsvermögen = she has the ability to show empathy for somebody’s predicament

momentan ist es für mich ein Wechselbad der Gefühle = right now I’m riding/going on an emotional roller-coaster 

himmelhoch jauchzend, zu Tode betrübt = be Dr. Jekyll (good guy) one day, Mr. Hyde (bad guy) the other day   

es bringt nichts, Gefühle zu verdrängen = it’s no use trying to suppress/inhibit/choke off one’s feelings

Sie müssen Ihre Schuldgefühle/Ihren Kummer/ihre Sorgen/diese unangenehmen Erinnerungen los werden = you need to wash away your guilt/grief/troubles/those unpleasant memories from your mind 

ich werde dieses komische Gefühl nicht los = I can’t shake/get rid of this funny feeling

sie hat alle Bedenken einfach weggelächelt = she just laughed off all her concerns; she put on a bright/brave face despite all the setbacks/ misfortunes she experienced

wenn ich mitten in der Nacht ein komisches Geräusch höre, habe ich immer ein mulmiges/beklemmendes Gefühl = I always have an eerie/uncanny feeling/a sense of discomfort when things go bump in the night

er/sie fühlte sich geniert/verlegen = he/she cringed at that embarrassing statement; her/his cousin’s/parents’ poor behavior/attitude was a cringeworthy/embarassing experience/moment for her/him    

einem guten Freund kann man immer seine Gefühle preisgeben = one can always pour out one’s feelings to a good friend

es gibt zu viele Pessimisten in meiner Firma = there are too many gloom and doom merchants in the company I work for 

ich bin immer skeptisch = the word “patience” doesn’t fill me with hope 

er schöpft Verdacht, dass in unserer Stadt irgendwas nicht koscher ist = he’s got a sinking feeling/he’s becoming suspicious/he has the growing suspicion that something is going wrong in our town 

nur wenige Leute betrachten die Zukunft mit Optimismus = not very many people feel upbeat about the future

die gute Stimmung/die Begeisterung kippt/verpufft/verfliegt allmählig = the situation has turned ugly; things took a nasty turn/started to come unstuck/to  unravel; things have taken a turn for the worse/for the weird; soon the vibe/buzz/good mood started to wear off/go south     

es sieht noch schlimmer aus als es ist = purgatory was upgraded to hell

er scheint, alles negativ zu sehen = he seems to be in a negative frame of mind

seine bissigen Kommentare waren ein Affront/eine Beleidigung = his pungent remarks were a blatant attempt to destabilize/disturb the peace in the office/family

es bringt nichts, beleidigt zu sein = you’d better forget the sour grapes; no use pouting;  no need to be a sore loser

der Chef wollte auf keinen Fall die Belegschaft verprellen = in his address the boss was careful not to hurt the employees‘ feelings

das kotzt mich an = This stinks! This sucks! This grosses me out!

dies ist eine Zumutung/Frechheit = this flies in the face of common sense/sound reason/good taste (or any other suitable noun); his tasteless/tacky behavior flies in the face of decency; this is outreageous/an outrage; this is beyond the pale/over the top; this is adding insult to injury; you are rubbing salt into the wound; she blasts his chutzpah/nerve/cheek for doing this to her; that’s scraping the bottom of the barrel; it’s a stretch; you’re jumping the gun; this is stuff out of left field; this was a wildly off-kilter/an out of character observation; the management’s decision (e.g. to freeze wages) flies in the face of the company’s staff 

der neue Steuerbeschluss ist eine Zumutung für Kleinverdiener = the new tax rule is a kick in the teeth for low-income earners; increasing taxes would heap/pour more misery on the livelihood of ordinary workers 

mein Chef mutet mir immer viel Arbeit/unangenehme Aufgaben zu = the boss always expects me to do a lot of work for him; I’m tired of all these tall orders/big asks; my supervisor expects me to practice what he doesn’t preach; my boss dumped that turkey on me

dies ist nicht zumutbar = It’s (just) not on!; this is not tolerable/acceptable

das würde ich ihr nicht zumuten = I wouldn’t dare ask her to do this; I wouldn’t expose her to this kind of treatment; I wouldn't inflict this unrewarding job/task on her

das kannst du ihm nicht zumuten = you can’t expect him to put up with this bullshit

leichter gesagt als getan = easier said than done
