KONTROVERSE & VERZERRUNG DER WAHRHEIT


die Presse/Nachrichtensendung verzerrt/verbiegt die Wahrheit = he’s sure the newspaper doctored/twisted/bent the facts/the truth on this report; the press (aka as the fourth estate) made misrepresentations of the reality; to me this article puts a spin on the truth; the news on TV seemed to warp/deviate/distort/skew/spin the whole story; this piece of news on the conflict is not on the up and up;  TV channel/ media outlet tried to spin the facts;  scandals are a staple of some newspapers; this news report is a far cry from the truth; the news media warped the public discourse by peddling/offering up outrageous political narratives rather than pursuing the truth; controversial events are sometimes falsely reframed by some media outlets  

Fernsehsender schürt die Ängste und Fantasien seines hungrigen Publikums = TV channel taps into the fears and fantasies of its hungry audience

Journalisten, die die Berichterstattung verzerren, werden angeprangert/zur Rede gestellt = journalists are being/get called out on/over/ for their bias reporting;  host pushes back on journalist’s claim about exclusive interview with the dictator

die Wahrheit wird sehr unterschiedlich dargestellt = in his speech the philosopher deviated from/detoured from the truth and subverted the purpose of fairness and justice for all; country stays on two wildly different tracks of information

wenn man einen Krieg verherrlicht, klingt er wie ein glorreiches Abenteuer, dabei ist er in Wirklichkeit absolut grausam/abscheulich =  if you glorify/romanticize war, you're making it sound like a glorious adventure; war is in fact an  absolutely/atrocious type of conflict that visits ruthless violence/widespread devastation upon innocent men, women and children   

die Wahrheit liegt irgendwo dazwischen =  the truth is in the middle/somewhere in between

der TV-Bericht hat nur die halbe Wahrheit dargestellt = the TV report just shaded the truth 

manche Politiker können sich geschickt von wichtigen Themen drücken = some politicians are very skilled at diverting/deflecting/ distracting attention from major problems; emphasizing that minor issue was another good example of the tail wagging the dog; the tail keeps wagging the dog; some politicians sort of always find a way to spin/deceive the public 

Menschen, die mit ihrem Latein am Ende sind, weichen öfter vom Thema ab = people at their wits’ end often digress/dodge questions from a subject

Sie befinden sich in einer Grauzone = you’re now in no-man’s land/in limbo

einige Fakten werden im Zeitungsbericht vertuscht  = there is more than mets the eye in the newspaper report; these dire facts don’t tell the full story 

heutzutage verbreiten einige Medien zu viele Desinformationen/Falschnachrichten =  nowadays some media outlets disseminate too much disinformation/fake news

die breite Öffentlichkeit sollte manchmal den Hype in den sozialen Medien ignorieren, da er zur Verbreitung irreführender Informationen genutzt wird = the general public should sometimes ignore social media hype as it is used to promote misleading information

das war eine Ente/Falschmeldung =  that was a false report/a rumor/fake news/a furphy (AUS)

dies ist echt wahr, egal ob man es glaubt oder nicht = it’s sure as hell/this is for real, whether you believe it or not

die Polizei nutzt Fake News aus, um hart durchzugreifen = the police milked the implications of the incident to justify hard-line action

was ein Mensch mal früher gesagt hat, kann ihn wieder einholen/heimsuchen/fällt ihm/ihr vor die Füße  = words uttered in the past often come back to haunt a person

er/sie sollte/n reinen Tisch machen/Wein einschenken = he should come clean on/about his true intentions; you should level with your boss/ parents/teacher about the incident; at least he had the nerve/face to tell the inconvenient/plain truth

manchmal gibt man was vor, um das Gegenteil zu erreichen (d. h. die richtige Information) = pretending to expect the opposite, some people employ “reverse psychology” to get what (i.e.the information) they want

manchmal umgehen gewiefte Politiker gewisse Themen = shrewd/deft/astute politicians sometimes sidestep an issue/the scenario/ respond in vague terms/tip-toe (tippy-toe) around a vexed question   

ihre Kommentare wurden missverstanden/verzerrt = her comments about the affair were misconstrued/got lost in translation; her words got twisted by the reporter

“Verstehe mich nicht falsch”, sagte er = “don’t get me wrong”, he said

ihre/seine Bemerkungen waren unverhältnismäßig = her words/statement were taken out of context/out of step with the current reality; somehow his uncouth comments don’t add up/stack up

skrupellose Anwälte werfen Prinzipien sehr oft über den Haufen = unscrupulous lawyers very often disregard/ignore/fudge principles/ dogmas; in his latest book the author sends a few principles/trashes his beliefs on vacation

diese Affäre ist in Kontroversen verstrickt = this affair is swathed in/draped in/shrouded by controversy; the stench of controversy is all over the place; there is a lot of controversy surrounding this issue

im Bundestag werden umstrittene Themen heiß diskutiert = in the parliament hot-button/hot-wire/hot-potato/vexed issues are the subject of controversial discussion  

er hat mich auf eine hinterhältige Weise abgelenkt  = I got thrown off/sidetracked by his devious method
