Hat (Name des Kandidaten) das Zeug zum Kanzler/Ministerpräsident? = Does (name of candidate) have what it takes to be PM/ Premier?der/die Kandidat/in bringt es nicht/ist der Rolle nicht gewachsen = the candidate is not up to the job; the candidate is not up to scratch/up to snuff to perform the job
bei der Wahl ist bereits eine Vorentscheidung gefallen = the millionaire seems to be a shoo-in/in the driver’s seat for the prime-minister job; the government party is in the driver’s/box seat; victory/triumph is almost in the bag for the sitting/incumbent president; the former transport minister is being touted as the next president
er/sie ist relativ unbekannt, aber er/sie könnte die Wahl gewinnen = a political outsider/a dark-horse (i.e. a rather unknown candidate) could end up winning the poll
