Vorteile/Nachteile abwägen = the telephone giant needs to weigh (up)/consider the benefits advantages/merits/upsides of entering the joint venture; company considers/ examines the good and the bad of a deal/offer; a report laid bare the trade-offs of the two approaches; I still have plenty of vacation to take but on the flip side I don’t earn enough money to afford it; company canvasses the pro’s and con’s of the project; our financial experts are starting to crunch the numbers on the project; pros outweigh the cons; this big project has too many downsides for our corporation; the board of directors sat down/convened to break down/analyze/size up the flaws/demerits/downsides/ faults/drawbacks of the company’s investment program; the upsides outweigh the downsides by a large margin; all options will be considered as nothing is off the table    

die Oberhand gewinnen = right now the company is on track to get a jump on/to gain the upper hand/an edge over its nearest competitors in the market share stakes; our team seems to own the inside track/have an ace in the hole/is the front-runner to run away with the title; with cheap fares across the board the start-up airline hopes to get a leg-up on the competition; he always tries to stay/to get on the front foot

Kapital/Profit aus etwas schlagen; Kasse machen; bahnbrechende Idee eines Mitarbeiters wird sofort aufgegriffen  = competitors are piggybacking on the big corporation’s pathway and poaching customers from them; nobody wants to miss out on the latest hype/buzz; management quickly seized on/pounced on the employee’s trailblazing idea to boost sales/revenue; whatever you do in life always try to stay ahead of the curve; everybody wants to get in on the act; lots of investors are eager to/lusting to cash in/make hay on the surging share market boom; our corporation looks to reap the benefits and to pick the low hanging fruit that will flow from the mega-deal; we’ve gotta make hay while the sun shines 

beim Schnäppchen hat er als erster sofort zugeschlagen = he was the first cab off the rank (AUS) to get his hands on the bargain 

Land/Firma/Ehefrau packte/fasste die Chance/Gelegenheit beim Schopf  =  gas-and-oil-producing country is clearly keen to make as much cash as it can out of this crisis; our company is very business-like, so we seized the moment/chance and took advantage of the opportunity that was there for us; when her husband was away on a weeklong trip, she seized the moment/took the opportunity to go to the a movies with her friends  a few times; "let’s make hay while the sun shines and go see some flicks as my husband is away on a lengthy business trip",  she said to her girlfriends

zwar machen die Ölmultis aufgrund der schlechten Konjunktur weniger Profit, für die Verbraucher aber ist es eher eine gute Nachricht, da der Sprit viel billiger geworden ist = it's not all bad news: what’s bad for the oil companies (less profit) is good for the consumer (cheaper gas/petrol), so it's an ill wind/a blessing in disguise   

es gibt Menschen/Konzerne, die immer ihre Vorteile suchen = ruthless businessmen are always intent on getting mileage/making hay out of some crummy deals/schemes; the ambitious executive always wants to be at the front of the queue/be the first cab off the rank (AUS); to stay ahead of the curve/game is the company’s motto/credo; confident politicians usually play to their strengths to achieve/to zero in on their objectives/goals; during the pandemic meal delivery services quietly fished in troubled (i.e. earnings skyrocketed) because during the lockdowns people had to stay at home; in the office there is always somebody waiting for a chance to steal a workmate’s thunder/to steal a march on a colleague’s idea; now he’s riding on his successful wife’s coattails; a tabloid newspaper/a magazine is  planning to cash in on the hype surrounding the celebrity's wedding by publishing exclusive photos of the ceremony; when the euro was launched some years ago there were a lot of swindlers who increased the prices in order to cash in on its introduction; grubby operators/companies intentionally and knowingly capitalize off of confusion/chaos whenever financial markets are hit by a downswing    

überall gibt es/findet man Schmarotzer/Trittbrettfahrer = everywhere there are people, referred to as hangers-on/spongers/freeloaders, who expect others to do the hard work/heavy lifting or who or who depend on other people’s generosity and thus gladly accept food/drinks and lodging without paying for it/without giving anything in return 

es ist unethisch und ungerecht, sich auf dem Rücken der Armen zu bereichern = it’s unfair and unethical to promote oneself/get rich on the back of other people’s misery

Marathonläufer verspielt Vorteil = he kind of lost the early advantage/edge he had in the marathon race after getting slightly injured letztendlich war diese Lösung für ihn/sie letztendlich das kleinere Übel =  for him this outcome was after all the lesser of two evils; for better or worse she/he will have to put up with the arrangement

man vergleicht sich mit Gleichgesinnten = How do his abilities stack up/weigh up with/against our requirements?

das war nichts im Vergleich zu vorher = his feat took a backseat to the marvelous goal the team had scored before

der Vergleich hinkt = in terms of speed and acceleration her sports car is miles ahead of his, so it’s really hard to compare them: these two (or more) people/objects are about as far apart as can be; there is a deep/wide ideological chasm/gulf/gap between these two political parties

man kann nicht Äpfel mit Birnen vergleichen = these two actors are like/as different as chalk and cheese; it’s hard to compare these two cars, they’re like apples and oranges 

die Veranstaltung war längst nicht so gut wie letztes Jahr = this time around the event paled in comparison with last year’s show
