KNEIPE & BAR   

lass uns mal heute Abend/morgen ein paar Kneipen abklappern = let’s go bar/pub crawling/hopping/on a binge tonight; tomorrow we could maybe trawl/juke bars here and there  

er trifft sich gerne mit seinen Kumpels in der Kneipe = he likes to hang out with the guys in the pub/bar/watering hole

er ist mit seinen Kumpels in der Kneipe um die Ecke = he’s down at the local (i.e. the pub in the vicinity) sinking/having a few schooners/ pints/sherbets (i.e. beer) with his mates/other blokes (AUS)

komm, wir gönnen uns mal ein Bier im Pub = let’s go to the pub and sink/down a few (AUS); they knocked back/washed down/drained a few tins/cans/glasses/bottles of beer

Wie wäre es mit einem kühlen Bier? = (Do you) fancy/how about a cold pint/beer?

Könnte ich noch ein Bier bekommen? (als Bestellung beim Kellner)= Any chance I could have another beer? (said to the waiter)

ich habe total Lust auf ein eiskaltes Bier = I’m craving for an ice-cold beer

es hört sich gut an = sounds good/great/breezy to me

auf ex trinken (exen) = when somebody says “bottoms up” he’d drink/finish drinking the glass of beer/champagne in one gulp/go; he tossed off/knocked back/chugged that large glass of beer in no time; he just skoled (AUS) the bottle of beer;  he knocked down his pint of beer in one gulp

in dieser Kneipe liegt die Latte sehr hoch beim Rotwein = they raise the bar when it comes to offering red wine in this wine-bar

gestern hatten wir einen guten Tropfen = we had a nice drop yesterday

der Alkoholgehalt von Wein und Bier wird mit ABV (alcohol by volume) gemessen; bei Spirituosen wird er mit dem Wort „proof“ angegeben =  the alcohol content of wine and beer is measured by ABV (alcohol by volume); for liquor/distilled spirits it is indicated by the word “proof”

mein Freund nahm nur einen Schluck zu sich  = my friend only pulled a gulp/took a long pull/swig on my glass

diese Plörre (Bier/Wein, alkoholische Getränke) ist eine Zumutung = I can’t drink this plonk/rotgut (AUS/UK for cheap/inferior tasting liquor, wine and beer); this wine is very insipid/tastes like dishwater; this wine sucks/is yucky

ich werde mir einen leckeren Cocktail gönnen = I’m going to treat myself to a nice cocktail

irgendwie habe ich den Verdacht, dass der Orangensaft mit einem Schuss/Alkohol, vielleicht Gin, gestreckt/versetzt wurde = somehow I have this funny feeling that the orange juice has been spiked with some alcoholic drink/stuff, maybe gin

 das Trinken eines Cocktails, der mit Methanol versetzt/vergiftet ist, kann tödlich sein =  drinking a cocktail spiked/poisoned/tainted with methanol can be deadly 

hier wird nur hochwertiger Whiskey serviert, der sogar Ihre Wehwehchen kurieren kann = in our bar we only dish up quality whiskey which can even cure anything that ails you

heute Abend gebe ich eine Runde aus; es geht aufs Haus = I’ll/let me buy you a drink; it’s my treat/the treat is on me; tonight it‘s my shout (AUS); I’ll shout (AUS) the next round of cocktails; this evening drinks and meals are free of charge/gratis/on the house/on us

er ist ein berüchtigter Schmarotzer/Schnorrer = he is a notorious sponger/freeloader/scrounger/moocher/cadger

ab und zu erschnorrt er eine Mahlzeit/ein Getränk von jemandem = every now and then he sponges/freeloads/mooches/cadges a meal/ drink off/from someone 

er hat eine Fahrt nach Hause erschnorrt/ergattert = he hitched/hopped/finagled a ride home    

Zum Wohl! Prost! Hoch soll sie/er leben/Auf deinen Vater, usw. =  Cheers! Cheers to/here's to your father/dad, etc!; I’d like to propose a toast to my wife/best friend, etc   

die Atmosphäre in unserer Kneipe ist fantastisch/mega/total geil = the vibe/atmosphere in our local pub is totally upbeat

gestern Nacht haben sie sich volllaufen lassen = they had a boozy night out

er hat Kopfschmerzen bekommen nach dem vielen Alkohol = he’s suffering from a hangover/the morning-after feelings/a headache after overindulging in drinking

das Glas Whiskey hat mir geholfen, den Schmerz zu lindern = that glass of whiskey sure helped tame the pain/ease the impact/sting 

Machosprüche von jemandem, der in der Kneipe Streit sucht = belligerent bloke (AUS) at a pub challenging another person: “I’ll show you who’s the boss”/“let’s take it outside”

was ein typisch australischer Biertrinker sagen könnte, wenn er nach Hause kommt = Aussie beer drinker war cry when he gets home: ”cool the tinnies and warm the set” (a cliché in AUS)

Kannst du das Bier in den Kühlschrank tun/auf den Tisch stellen? = Can you just pop (AUS/UK)/put/place the bottle of beer/the tinny (AUS) in the fridge/on the table?

er hat über den Durst getrunken = he just drank too much booze/grog

lass uns mal ein Saufgelage veranstalten = hey guys, let’s booze it up tonight/stage/organize/have a booze-up/beer-up; let’s hit the turps (AUS) tonight

er benimmt sich wie ein Stinkstiefel, wenn er zu viel säuft/trinkt  = on the grog/booze he is a loose cannon

Komasaufen ist schädlich = binge drinking (aka coma drinking in some European countries) is extremely harmful; too many young people black out from binge drinking 

Regierung bekämpft Komasaufen = there is a government campaign teaching teenagers to be DrinkWise and to “drink responsibly” (AUS) to combat drinking binges

eine Kneipe/ein Restaurant/ein Laden wird boykottiert = we decided no longer to patronize/to shun a certain pub/eatery; restaurant gets the cold shoulder from press over poor reviews;  boycotting a business often means that you forgo quality products or pay a higher price for alternatives

wenn ein Restaurant keine Lizenz für den Ausschank von alkoholischen Getränken besitzt, dürfen Kunden ihren/ihr eigenen/s Wein/Bier mitbringen, die sie im Getränkeladen kaufen (AUS) = if a restaurant has no license to sell alcoholic drinks, patrons can bring their own wine/beer which they purchase in a bottle shop (AUS); such a restaurant will display the sign “BYO”, which stands for “bring your own” beverage/grog (AUS); licensed restaurants may also allow patrons to bring their own bottle if they wish to do so
