SCHULE & LEHRE     

“nicht abschreiben/schummeln; kein Spickzettel”, sagte der Lehrer  = "no cribbing and no cheating, please";  “no pony/crib/cheat sheet allowed”, the teacher said; the teacher caught him/her cribbing from/off a classmate's sheet/paper; in school my brother would often cheat off of his friend’s test  

ich kann heute Abend mit euch nicht ausgehen, ich  muss pauken/büffeln = can’t go out tonight with you guys, ‘cause I have to cram/grind/ bone up/burn the midnight oil for my exam tomorrow; tonight I need to hit the books/to hunker down/bunker down (AUS) and study hard for tomorrow’s test; I’m staying at home tonight because I’m trying to scrape through my final exam 

wir sind auf die Schnapsidee gekommen, jetzt ins Kino zu gehen, anstatt zu büffeln für die Prüfung =  on a lark/on a whim we just decided to go to the movies instead of cramming for the test

gut abgeschnitten bei der Prüfung = yesterday she aced the Math/Maths test; he passed the test with flying colors 

im Gymnasium war sie/er ein Streber = he spent a lot of time studying and was (a kind of) a nerd/a grind/a wonk in the class; she/he was a hard-working A-student in High-School 

da mein Bruder in der Schule immer sehr schnell lernen konnte, wurde er auch Klassenbester =  being always a quick study in High School paved the way for my brother to become top/head of his class 

gestern bin ich beim Test durchgefallen = I failed/flunked the test yesterday

als Schüler hat man hin und wieder die Schule geschwänzt/blau gemacht = when I was in High School I used to cut/skip/ditch/blow off class/school; as a student in a State School he played hooky every now and then; nowadays not very many pupils wag school (AUS)

ein Freund von mir wurde als Kind in der Schule gehänselt/gemobbt = a friend of mine told me he was taunted/bullied when he was a kid attending elementary school; he was frequently harassed by the schoolyard bully

Schuldirektor/Lehrer knöpft sich/geht gegen ungezogene Schüler vor =  the teacher school principal is lowering the boom on unruly/ wayward  students; the professor took the students to task in order to bring them into line/conformity with more acceptable behavior; the tutor is intent on stopping the rot in the classroom/cutting out the students’bad behavior/misbehavior

der Schuldirektor hat den frechen Studenten die Leviten gelesen =  the school principal read the unruly/boisterous students the riot act; every now and then students/pupils need to be straightened out/brought to heel 

allerdings gibt es auch Schüler, die gut erzogen sind =  however, there are pupils who are well-behaved

in Amerika werden College-Studenten im ersten Jahr manchmal gehänselt/schikaniert = freshmen in US-College are sometimes hazed

Studenten knabbern gerne Studentenfutter = students always enjoy munching a fruit and nut mix/trail mix

mein Sohn geht in die 8. Klasse = my son is an eighth-grader (USA)/a year eight student (AUS)

Schulen überprüfen manchmal den Leistungsstand von Schülern = schools sometimes test students to identify their progress

er bekommt immer gute Noten = he always gets good grades (USA)/marks (AUS/UK)

manche Schüler schmeicheln sich bei den Lehrern ein = some students suck up to/get buddy-buddy with their teachers in the hope of receiving better grades/marks

Lehrer hat Schüler einen guten Ratschlag gegeben = the teacher gave the student a good piece of advice/some words of wisdom Literaturprofessor erklärt den Studenten, was das Buch auf sich hat =  the literature professor breaks down the book's content for the students 

wegen ein paar Fangfragen hat er das Examen nicht bestanden = some curve-ball/tricky questions at the exam tripped him up

sie sitzt auf heißen Kohlen/wartet gespannt weil sie die Ergebnisse der ABI-Prüfungen wissen möchte = she was on pins on needles waiting for/is still sweating on the results of her High School exam

mein Vater hat 1950 sein Abi gemacht = my father matriculated (AUS) from high school in 1950

mein Bruder hat sich mehr schlecht als recht durch die Schule geschlagen = my brother got through school by the seat of his pants

Hast du dich für den Kurs angemeldet? = Have you signed up/enrolled/registered for classes/the course/class?

heute kann ich nicht (zum Unterricht) kommen = =  today (I’m afraid) I have to give it a miss/I’ll be absent (from class)/I won’t/can’t make it 

der Lehrer ist für die Schüler verantwortlich, wenn sie die Straße überqueren   = the teacher lugs the load/burden of being responsible for her/his/their pupils when they cross the street

morgen musst du die Matheprüfung ablegen = tomorrow you will have to take/sit a math(s) test

heute haben wir “hitzefrei” (oder "schneefrei") = no classes today, because of heat; it’s a “snow day”, when school is closed due to snowfall (USA)

Ist dein Sohn versetzt worden oder sitzen geblieben? = Was your son moved up into the next grade/year or was he held back? Does he have to repeat the 8th grade/year?

nach dem Abi kann man überall eine Lehre machen = my cousin served a/an (trade) apprenticeship/cadetship/internship after high school; many institutions offer executive /vocational education programs; she is now interning at a local bank

eine Hotellehre erfreut sich großer Beliebtheit/ist sehr begehrt = hospitality traineeship nowadays is a sought after profession especially in countries where tourism plays a key role in the economy 

man soll versuchen, bei einer Lehre so viele Abteilungen wie möglich zu durchlaufen = when you serve/complete an internship/a training stint try to get familiar with as many departments as possible

für junge Azubis/Trainees ist die Bezahlung angemessen = apprentice/intern/trainee wages are attractive for young workers

er macht weiter mit seiner Ausbildung/Fortbildung = he signed up for an advanced course to upgrade/retool/finetune his skills; a media outlet offered him the chance/opportunity to immerse into the cut and thrust of journalism; trainees/volunteers are being primed to jump into action soon 

in der EDV-Abteilung können sich Mitarbeiter weiterbilden = the IT department is upskilling its staff 

er beherrscht die Regeln aus dem Effeff = he knows all the rules and regulations down pat/off pat

er macht sich/Du machst dich mit dem neuen Job vertraut = the supervisor showed him the ropes; she was given the lowdown/skinny/ scoop on her new activity; you have to learn the ropes when you get inducted into a new job; first of all you have to teach them the X’s and O’s/the ABC of the business/job

ein erfahrener Referent führt ein Knigge-Seminar durch = an expert facilitator is scheduled to conduct a seminar on good manners

bereits ab Montag kann man sich für den Kurs anmelden = you can start signing up for the seminar as early as next Monday

Was macht man nach dem Abi, Uni oder Fachhochschule? = Should one enroll in a higher tertiary education institution or rather attend a vocational institution/a technical school after finishing High School? 

du könntest deine Fremdsprachenkenntnisse auffrischen = you could bring/get your language skills up to snuff/up to scratch/up to par  again

Jugendliche können auf einer Farm im australischen Busch Erfahrung sammeln  = youngsters  can get a taste of the bush if they join a so called jackaroo/jillaroo school, i. e. you soak up experience/learn how to work  on a farm in Australia
