STAU, AUTOBAHN & LANDSTRAßE   

jeden Tag müssen sich Pendler auf Staus/Rückstaus einstellen; man muss stets mit stockendem Verkehr rechnen  = car commuters face a traffic jam/bottleneck/gridlock/standstill/tailback/ congestion/pinchpoint on any given day; yesterday I ran into/got stuck in a jam; right  now traffic is choking/ snarling over the bridge; every morning traffic backs up/banks up along the main highway; a glitch in the system is obstructing/snarling the morning commute traffic; massive lines of traffic are building up/banking up on the roads from the city this afternoon; commuters are hit/ plagued with major lane changes; the city braces for commuter bedlam/chaos/havoc/shambles this morning; city roads/freeways are choked/clogged; traffic is gridlocking along the main highways; plenty of gridlock on the town’s streets in the afternoon rush-hour; many incidents disrupted traffic on the motorways/main arteries this morning; morning traffic was marred/derailed by technical glitches; (traffic) congestion routinely snarls up large cities  

heute Morgen gab es zäh fließenden Verkehr auf der Autobahn = this morning cars/trucks/ buses were going bumper to bumper on the freeway/motorway 

Knotenpunkt an Kreuzung wird entzerrt = bottleneck/congestion/gridlock at intersection will be offset/mitigated/relieved

an vielen städtischen Straßen muss der Verkehr entzerrt/entlastet werden = traffic needs to be decongested/offset on/in a lot of city roads; traffic crawl must be reduced

wegen Sturm ist auf den Straßen der Teufel los = the storm is wreaking havoc with the town’s transport system

an Werktagen sind viele Pendler unterwegs = on weekdays there are plenty of commuters on the road

im Summer ist der Verkehr besonders beeinträchtigt durch viele Baustellen = in the summer too many roadwork sites play havoc with traffic 

die Fahrbahndecke wird ausgebessert/erneuert/repariert = the road pavement/surface will be upgraded/renewed/repaired

aufgrund von Sanierungssarbeiten wird die Straße in den nächsten zwei Monaten gesperrt sein = due to upgrade works a road closure will be in place for the next two months 

wenn man auf dem Land lebt, muss man lange Fahrten zur Arbeit in Kauf nehmen = the downside of purchasing a  house in the countryside is that unfortunately one has to put up with/face longer commuting time 

wenn tausende Pendler wieder aufs Auto umsteigen, könnte die Fahrt zur Arbeit drei mal so lang werden = if thousands of commuters move off public transport and into their cars travel time could increase threefold

er/sie musste Gas geben/das Auto beschleunigen = he/she had to shift into a higher gear/overdrive when he/she overtook the truck; she pushed hard on the accelerator when she got onto the freeway; cars usually gather speed/pace when they hit the freeway

wenn man die Spur wechselt, muss man blinken/den Blinker betätigen = when changing lanes, you should switch on your turn indicator/ signal

er musste plötzlich bremsen/in die Eisen treten = suddenly he had to hit/slam/pump the brakes

Geisterfahrer sind eine Gefahr auf deutschen Autobahnen = wrong-way drivers constitute a big hazard on German freeways

Geisterfahrer wird festgenommen = a wrong-way driver gets arrested after driving/travelling the wrong way on the autobahn

in den letzten sechs Monaten war der ADAC in ganz Deutschland sehr aktiv = the ADAC attended to about a million breakdowns in the last six months country-wide
