der Gegner ist/war besser als wir/er = last night we were upstaged/outperformed by a better team; the runner’s top-notch/vintage performance/effort put all other contenders in the shade; he was overshadowed by a smarter opponent; glamor team is head and shoulders above the rest of the contenders

der Schriftsteller ist über sich hinaus gewachsen = with his latest book the writer punched above his weight/finally transcended all his previous attempts at writing a compelling whodunit/detective story

Fehler werden aufgearbeitet/analysiert = it’s high time we looked at/dissected what went wrong with our plan/project; we should engage into some soul-searching/ do a post-mortem; he is trying/struggling to come to terms with his horrendous losses from the disaster; the company is revisiting the issue; it’s now time to examine why there was a failure; we should sort out/digest/dissect the full mental impact of the disaster; I think we should undertake a journey through a person’s/an orgsanization’s troubled past; they still seem to be reckoning with a past issue; let’s do some forensics on the problem and pinpoint the cause of the glitch; the couple was advised to look back on the failures of their marriage; You’re always raking over/dredging up old coals/ashes/problems, aren’t you? Will you ever get over/vanquish the gloomy/ bad/ shabby memories of your past life?; I guess we should take stock of our relationship and move on; he should finally lay the ghost of his poor past behavior to rest

wir sind noch nicht drüber weggekommen = How will we mend the hurt minds?; we’re still licking our wounds; it’s hard to live down/sort out bad experiences; war/accident scars are slow to heal; breaking with the past remains our priority
