mittelmäßige Mannschaft schlägt sich durch = average/middle-of-the-pack team limps/muddles through the season; side finds a way to stumble through it in the game’s fourth/second half; team blows hot (first half) and cold (second half); supporters/fans were put through a roller-coaster ride; team played a sloppy/an uneven game; squad couldn’t get a rhythm/groove out there; our performance was just average /fair to middling
wir spielen nur eine durchwachsene Saison = team is/are flying under the radar this season; not much is coming easy for the (team) this season; we are just sputtering through the season
obwohl wir ab und zu gewinnen, ist unser Spiel nicht konstant = we are not a consistent good team yet, just a one-trick pony/horse; we are an up-and-down-team, win one, lose one; our offense bogged down/grinded to a woeful finish in the second half
unsere Mannschaft ist ausbaufähig = squad is still a “work in progress”; it’s still a long way to go and we still have many things we need to get better at

wir haben sonst wie immer gespielt = we just carried on/handled our business; we just worked our habits/took care of business; superstar turned in a rock-steady/solid performance/exhibition; it was a sotto voce performance/showing; team has learned how to win ugly; team started well but then stalled
wir haben heute nicht die Sterne vom Himmel gespielt = today we didn’t play/shoot lights out
Mannschaft kriegt es momentan nicht ganz hin/baut ab = team is sweating out a mediocre season; team is having a helter-skelter season; team’s fast start fizzles/fades down the stretch; we need a convincing win to stop the bleeding/bloodletting/hemorrhage; team goes cold in the second half/team stalls offensively ; no matter who gets lined up there is no chemistry; ; offensively we were hit or miss
wir sind mal wieder über den Berg = things are starting to click/coming together now; squad is on the mend/team is climbing the charts; team is on the upswing; guys are starting to turn the corner/to get over the hump; we’re getting our act together again
Mannschaft legt eine gute zweite Hälfte hin = team finally got in(to) a groove/in a rhythm in the second half; team was able to shake off a slow start; after a sluggish beginning it was (team) all the way
holpriger Saisonbeginn wird abgeschüttelt, Mannschaft befindet sich auf dem Weg der Besserung = after a sketchy/lousy/up-and-down/ rickety season begin team shook off the lethargy, seized the momentum and righted the ship; after a recent funk/slump things are starting to click again; the latest win/ triumph/victory was a confidence builder; we were in a rut and with this win we got a breather; we’re headed in the right direction again
mit einem überragenden Spiel haben wir alle Sorgen der bis dato vermasselten Saison ad acta legen können = with just one great game we managed to exorcise the demons of a so far downtrodden season; we managed to end the season with a strong/high note
es geht wieder aufwärts = hopefully we can hit a stride; team is finding its groove/magic again; squad is beginning to taste success; we’re a young side on the upswing
