in deutschsprachigen Ländern ist Weihnachten verbunden mit dem Begriff der “Bescherung” = in English-speaking countries Christmas is associated with the expression “season of giving”
man sollte bei der Bescherung nicht übertreiben = just don’t go overboard with your Christmas presents to the kids
lass uns diese unerwünschten Weihnachtsgeschenke loswerden = let’s get rid of/weed out these dud gifts
in seiner Weihnachtsansprache hat sich der Bundeskanzler Gedanken über die Zukunft gemacht und den Zusammenhalt aller Bürger gelobt = in his Christmas message the PM reflected on the confidence in the future as well as on the cooperative spirit of all citizens pulling /coming together
Weihnachten in unserem Land ist zu kommerzialisiert = during Christmas there is too much commercial frenzy in our country
Vorsätze fürs neue Jahr fassen = we should/gotta make some New Year’s resolutions; you shouldn’t back down from/wimp on new year’s resolutions/vows; I vow to exercise more; "What will you resolve to do better in business/family life? More exercise, cut down on booze”, he said; don’t set the New Year’s resolution bar too high/low
Wie bist du ins neue Jahr gestartet? = How did you kick off the new year?
ein besinnliches neues Jahr wünschen = I wish you a spiritually fulfilling/enriching New Year
wir wünschen dir/dem Geburtstagskind alles Gute = hey birthday boy/girl, we wish you all the best/nothing but the best
er hat nächste Woche Geburtstag = his birthday is rocking around next week
morgen begeht sie/er einen runden Geburtstag = tomorrow she/he celebrates a milestone/decade/age birthday
mein Nachbar möchte eine Grillparty schmeißen = my neighbor wants to lay on a barbecue
da ein heftiger Sturm/schleches Wetter droht/sich anbahnt, steht das Grillen auf Messers Schneide = due to a looming storm our barbecue party is on the line/in jeopardy/hanging in the balance; lousy/nasty weather could cast a pall over our barbecue party
Wer ist zuständig für die Getränke/das Essen? = Who is looking after/tending to the drinks/beer/wine/booze/the food?
