Numerus Clausus in Australien = entrance to a university in Australia is based on school leavers’ marks, i.e. the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) score 

in AUS wird der ATAR (Numerus Clausus, d.h. Notendurchschnitt) für jeden Uni-Kurs jährlich neu festgelegt = the so called “cut-off”, which varies from year to year, constitutes the minimum score/marks required to make the cut for any given course; the equivalent in the USA is the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)  

einige Studenten müssen vielleicht eine Uni-Aufnahmeprüfung machen bzw. sich einem Eignungstest unterziehen = however some canditades with no longer valid/recent certificates will have to sit/take the SPAT (Special Admission Tertiary Test - AUS)   

das System der Hochschulzulassung muss überarbeitet/reformiert werden = the university admissions system has to be revamped/ reformed 

um das Ergebnis seines/ihres Examens zu erfahren, wird Student/in auf die Folter gespannt/sitzt Student/in auf heißen Kohlen = the student had to sweat on the outcome of the exam for a long time

den Unis fehlt das Geld, die Regierung kann das große Loch nicht stopfen = government funding guarantee is not enough to plug big financial hole in university budgets

die (Name der Uni) hat der (Name der Uni) den Rang abgelaufen als beste Universität im Lande = the University of (name) has edged out/beat out/pipped the University of (name) as the country’s highest-ranked tertiary institution;  move over, Sydney University, we (Melbourne University) are now the best university in the nation

wir leben in einer WG = we’re sharing accommodation/digs with some other students; it’s always nice to live in a dorm (short for dormitory, USA)/student residence when you go to college

er hat ehemalige Kommilitonen/Freunde besucht = he came into town to catch up with some of his former schoolmates/school chums/ alumni (singular: alumnus/US also alum)/old friends

ich bin einem ehemaligen Kommilitonen am Nachmittag begegnet/über den Weg gelaufen = this afternoon I crossed paths with a former college mate (of mine)

nach einem Jahr Abwesenheit habe ich echt Lust/Bock, wieder zurück zur Uni zu gehen =  after a gap year I’m just busting/I have a nagging yearn/I am keen to go back to college
