in unserer Firma wird man eher willkürlich/nach Gutdünken befördert = in our company you get promoted at the boss’s discretion/if you’re in the boss’s good books/arbitrarily
wenn es um die Besetzung einer einflussreichen Position geht, werden eher “die Günstlinge” der Chefs befördert = some bosses tend to promote “their loyalists” to influential/key positions
um weiter zu kommen in unserem Büro, muss man sich bei jemandem anbiedern/einschleimen = our office is somehow a workplace in which employees feel they have to bootlick/apple-polish/act buddy-buddy in order to get ahead; budding up to one’s boss is a way of being considered for promotion; sycophantic backslapping is a form of currying favor with/polishing the apple with/sucking up to/buttering up the bosses; he's the kind of person who often cozies up to/kowtows to/genuflects to his superiors; he is the supervisor’s yesman/lapdog/poodle/errand boy /flunky
er wurde in die Pampa weggelobt = he was dispatched/exiled to the middle of nowhere/to a minor department
ihre Ambitionen wurden zerstört/vernichtet = her ambitions to become a manager were thwarted/dashed/crushed/snuffed out/came crashing down
