KARRIERE

man braucht viel Geduld und harte Arbeit um das Karriereziel zu erlangen = a lot of patience and hard work is needed to achieve/fulfill one’s aspirations 

junge Executives sind karrieregeil = ambitious/up-and-coming/high-flying executives are utmost intent on/hell-bent on climbing up/ moving up the career ladder; getting  a job for career and recognition is a key criterion for young executives

sie/er hat eine wunderbare Karriere hingelegt = she skyrocketed/catapulted to success in the corporate world; he managed to move up the career ladder

er hat die Karriereleiter erklommen = he shimmied his way into the top echelons of the company; he went on to become the managing director; only a few executives will end up scaling the ranks of the company

gute Beziehungen sind viel wert = in today’s corporate world you need somebody to chart your career

Führungskräfte sollten eine Auszeit nehmen, wenn der Job zu stressig wird = stressed-out managers sometimes opt/choose to take a career sabbatical

nach langer Pause braucht man Zeit bis die Karriere wieder in Gang kommt = after a long hiatus from work execs need some time to resurrect/reboot/rebirth their careers

für viele Arbeitnehmer ist der eigene Job langweilig = many people are stuck in a dead-end/boring job; some individuals/execs hang on to a prestige job just for the ride

es ist anstrengend immer die gleiche Routine abzuspulen = it’s easy to get tired of performing the same old daily work; it’s mentally fatiguing to be stuck in a routine/in a time-warp

für sie ist eine Beförderung so gut wie ausgeschlossen = her career is stalling as chance for promotion is almost inexistent/out of the question/has been shot down/has been knocked down by the Executive Board

bei Beförderung wird sie/er übergangen = the internal applicant was passed over/skipped over for promotion in favor of an outsider; not getting promoted/elevated was a dark chapter in her/his (their) career

in unserer Firma wird man eher willkürlich/nach Gutdünken befördert = in our company you get promoted at the boss’s discretion/if you’re in the boss’s good books/arbitrarily

wenn es um die Besetzung einer einflussreichen Position geht, werden eher “die Günstlinge” der Chefs befördert = some bosses tend to promote “their loyalists” to influential/key positions   

um weiter zu kommen in unserem Büro, muss man sich bei jemandem anbiedern/einschleimen = our office is somehow a workplace in which employees feel they have to bootlick/apple-polish/act buddy-buddy in order to get ahead; budding up to one’s boss is a way of being considered for promotion; sycophantic backslapping is a form of currying favor with/polishing the apple with/sucking up to/buttering up the bosses; he's  the kind of person who often cozies up to/kowtows to/genuflects to his superiors; he is the supervisor’s yesman/lapdog/poodle/errand boy /flunky

er wurde in die Pampa weggelobt = he was dispatched/exiled to the middle of nowhere/to a minor department  

ihre Ambitionen wurden zerstört/vernichtet = her ambitions to become a manager were thwarted/dashed/crushed/snuffed out/came crashing down

seine Karriere ist gefährdet = his career is on the line/in jeopardy/on notice/is teetering; his career is suddenly stuck/trapped in limbo/in the middle of nowhere/ in a no-man’s land

sie hat einen Karriereknick erlitten  = her career hit an unexpected snag/speed bump/stalled when she became pregnant 

ich bin zu alt um meinen Arbeitsplatz zu wechseln, d.h. ich bin sozusagen meiner Firma mehr oder weniger ausgeliefert = I’ too old to change jobs, so I kind of feel that the company I work for has me over a barrel

irgendwann muss man die eigene Karriere realistisch betrachten = at some stage in our careers we must face reality

Privatangelegenheiten sollten eigentlich eine untergeordnete Rolle spielen  = in the corporate world private affairs should always take a backseat/play second fiddle to company interests   

der Nachwuchs wird gefördert = there are plenty of fledgling/emerging/budding stars on the horizon; our company has hired/taken on some talented/skilled young Turks/professionals; up-and-coming/upstart executives are always eager/lusting to climb the corporate ladder; we have a few rising stars/high-flyers on our management team; hot-and-rising/fast-rising/high-flying execs typically possess an MBA, are good-looking and barely aged over 30; year in year out young performers/young guns/young hopefuls join large corporations to advance their careers; there is a new generation of wine-growers/bakers/electricians/farmers who want to follow in the footsteps of their families
