SCHIEDSRICHTER 


Spieler meckern/motzen sehr oft = player jaws at referees and gets thrown out/ejected from game; player mouthed off/lipped off to the official; grumbling/pouting player is shooting off/blowing off his mouth again; his fiery temperament got the better of him; player voiced his frustration with the officiating; player is always nitpicking; player takes issue with the call     

Was hat er/der Schiri gepfiffen? … fragt der Spieler; 3-Sekunden-Verstoß in der Zone = What did the he/the ref call? ... player asks; player was whistled for a 3 second lane (paint/key) violation 

Spieler bekommt gelbe Karte wegen Meckerns = player picks up/was given/gets slapped with a technical foul/yellow card for arguing a call; player argued with the officials and got a yellow card; player was hit with a technical foul; player was booked/admonished for backchat(ing)/dissent; coach received a yellow card/technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct; player was assessed a technical for complaining to officials on his way to the locker room

Spieler meckert/motzt laut, weil Foul nicht gepfiffen wurde = ref-baiting loudmouth barks away/yaps at the refs after no-call

Spieler ist ein Dauermeckerer/versucht immer Fouls zu schinden = player is a crybaby/perennial nitpicker/complainer/drama queen;  some players always try to bait refs into calls

Spieler kassiert/bekommt die rote Karte weil er einem Zuschauer den Ball an den Kopf wirft  = player throws ball at spectator and refs deem it “a hostile act” so he gets ejected from game

Spieler wird diesmal bestraft, nachdem er schon vorher beim Schiri negativ aufgefallen war = player gets punished because he sort of  had carry-over points from previous offenses

Rudelbildung nach bösem Foul = players huddled around/mobbed/crowded the referee/official (for the record again: in Germany the verb “mobbing” means “bullying/harassing”); players mobbed/hounded/surrounded/swarmed the referee; teams got into a scrum; players ganged up on the referee; emotions boiled over; referees/official jumped into the fray making sure players didn’t go at one another; players kept going at it as others joined the fray/scrum; players huddle up and get ready to fight; eight players on the pitch/court quickly converged on the area/dropped into the mix; game officials/referees had to sort out the mess 

die Schiedsrichter haben die Rudelbildung gelöst =  officials/referees broke up the scrum

Schiris pfeifen sehr kleinlich, weil das Spiel sehr ruppig ist = it’s a very physical game, so the game is being called/officiated tight 

Schiris müssen Streithähne trennen =  players barked at/mouthed to each other;  referees had to separate players who got heated; fouled player had to be restricted by temmates from going after other player, who had hit him hard

rüdes Foul wird mit roter Karte geahndet = player gets red card for vicious foul

Spieler wird suspendiert = player got suspended for rough conduct; player receives a suspension for talking back to official; player sounds off on refs and gets suspension

Superstar muss leider eine Sperre für 6 Spiele hinnehmen = the 6-game suspension was a tough pill to swallow for the superstar

manchmal gibt es den Superstar-Bonus, d.h. sie werden bevorteilt = some superstars receive the benefit of the doubt on many close calls; superstars often have too many liberties/favorable ref calls; superstars sometimes are pandered to by the referees

Superstar wird von den Schiris “verfolgt” = the superstar gets a raw deal from refs

Schiris haben manchmal ruppige Spieler auf dem Kieker = referees are sometimes after rough players

Suspendierung ist zwar bedauernswert aber wahrscheinlich gerechtfertigt = suspension seemed to be somehow unfortunate but was probably warranted

diese Art von Vergehen/Suspendierung wird mit einem Bußgeld geahndet = this type of offense/suspension attracts a fine

Management diskutiert mit den Unparteiischen = club management takes on/messes/argues with league referees

Trainer ist außer sich vor Wut/war total sauer auf die Unparteiischen = coach directed his ire at officials for not calling fouls made against the team’s superstar; coach’s frustration boiled over after referees kept calling too many fouls against his team; coach was very disgusted with the officiating

Trainer und Fans sind frustriert nach umstrittener Schiedsrichterentscheidung  = coach was left frustrated by the referees’ controversial/ disputed decision to reverse a call; coach challenged the call but was unsuccessful; it was a contentious call that induced wrath from the local fans 

Videobeweis wird eingeschaltet; VAR kommt bei einigen Fans nicht gut an = VAR (Video Assistant Referee/Video Assistant)/the bunker has the task of reviewing any disputed calls/ decisions; flagrant foul call was waved off as a video review overturns it; ref waived off the basket/goal; a replay review went in team’s favor when officials determined player got fouled in the box; after a video check by bunker referee disallows play/waves off a goal/basket; VAR detractors think that sometimes the bunker does more harm than good; some fans believe/think that video refereeing is sucking the joy from sport 

Entscheidung wird/wurde nicht revidiert = ruling held up after VAR review; technical foul call was upheld/stood 

Spieler sind (extrem) sauer auf die Schiris = players voice their frustration/express their annoyance with the officiating; tonight it was biased against us; team was brought undone/collapsed by the referee’s decision; player/coach got heated with the refs about doubtful call 

Trainer ist überhaupt nicht angetan von Schiedsrichtern = coach expressed his disappointment at/with the officiating; this call was a “joke”; coach wasn’t exactly thrilled when several calls went against his team; coach launches a broadside at referees

Schiri und Trainer haben sich angeschrien = coach and referees got into a shouting match

Schiri zeigt Fingerspitzengefühl = the referee took a lenient view of the foul and used/exercised savvy/common sense

manchmal fehlt den Unparteiischen das Fingerspitzengefühl = sometimes referees lack the necessary savvy to assess a critical situation; coach is deeply dissatisfied with the lack of common sense by officials

Schiri war zu großzügig in seinen Entscheidungen = the official was often too generous in his interpretations

Wer pfeift das Abendspiel? = Who’s calling/working the game tonight?

es ist Verlass auf die Schiris, die heute Abend pfeifen = bona fide referees are on duty tonight

man kann sagen, dass im Großen und Ganzen die Entscheidungen der Schiedsrichter sitzen  = well, usually referee calls are on the money/ absolutely correct

Schiri pfeift/gibt Foul/Elfmeter = ref called/rang up a foul; ref assessed a tech foul to (name player); player got whistled for a foul; ref awards a penalty kick

Spieler steht im Abseits = player was off-side/in an off-side position  

es gab keine Beschwerden = there was no griping about call

Schiri hat nicht gepfiffen = official/referee didn’t call (a foul, etc); ref lets it (e.g. a push by defender) fly; no whistle came

wegen einiger umstrittenen Entscheidungen endet Spiel im Widerspruch  = due to some doubtful/iffy calls game ended mired in controversy

eigentlich konnte der Schiri ein derartig übles Foul nicht übersehen = this ugly foul was so egregious that it couldn’t be overlooked by the ref

nach dem Verweis vom Spielfeld sollte Spieler bei Diskussionen mit den  Unparteiischen auf Schimpfwörter verzichten = after ejection player should definitely not use four-letter words in his conversations with the refs

weil Trainer bei einer Entscheidung des Schiris sarkastisch applaudiert hat, wird er auf die Tribüne geschickt = player/coach was ejected for sarcastically applauding a foul call

nachdem Schiri Mist gepfiffen hat, wird er scharf kritisiert/auf ihn geschimpft  = official was in the firing line after a few bad calls

jetzt hat der Schiedsrichter in unserem Sinne gepfiffen  = team catches/gets a break because referee made favorable call

Schiri macht Fehler wieder gut  = that was a make-up call

Spieler hat Schiri versehentlich umgerannt  = player plowed over/fell over official inadvertently

das Spiel ist soeben abgepfiffen worden = the final whistle has just sounded
